Gatunek borealno-górski, występujący w Szwecji, Finlandii, Karelii, północno-wschodniej części Europy oraz w górach Europy środkowej, na południe docierając do Pirenejów, Włoch północnych, Chorwacji, Bośni, Siedmiogrodu i gór Riła w Bułgarii; notowany poza tym z Ameryki Północnej. W Polsce notowany zaledwie z kilku stanowisk, przy czym dawne dane o występowaniu w Przemkowie są niewiarygodne. Larwy odbywają rozwój w przegrzybiałym drewnie martwych, stojących lub powalonych na ziemię drzew iglastych. Postacie dojrzałe pojawiają się w czerwcu i lipcu. W ciągu dnia prowadzą skryty sposób życia, odbywają loty w godzinach wieczornych.
