Gatunek zamieszkujący głównie północną i środkową Europę, na zachód sięgający do Francji, notowany również z północnych Włoch. W Polsce znany z nielicznych, rozproszonych stanowisk, rzadko i sporadycznie spotykany. Zasiedla biotopy suche na otwartych terenach, wrzosowiskach, pobrzeżach lasu oraz w jasnych lasach sosnowych i świerkowych. Znajdowany pod płatami mchów, kamieniami, opadłym listowiem w gniazdach mrówek oraz w ich sąsiedztwie.
