About the Initiative
Coleoptera Poloniae is a country-wide scientific initiative created within the Polish Biodiversity Information Network (KSIB), in cooperation of the University of Warsaw and the Museum and Institute of Zoology PAS. It brought together specialists, both professionals and amateur entomologists. We cooperate also with the Polish Entomological Society.
Aims and scope of activities
Our goal is to create a complete and up-to-date source of knowledge on beetle (Coleoptera) fauna of Poland. We use all available documented information on distribution and biology of the species. The main sources are scientific papers, specimens in collections and photographs documenting observations. The results are available by the database Biodiversity Map and as standard publications.
The Database
Its foundation was digitization of 23 volumes of the Catalogus Faunae Poloniae (KFP, Part XXIII — Coleoptera), published in 1971-2000 by the Museum and Institute of Zoology PAS. Its transformed content became a cornerstone for the Coleoptera@PL Database, built in 2009. After the launch of the Biodiversity Map project, the database was supplied with new data and its enhanced form works as BioMap Database (simplified from Biodiversity Map).
