Gatunek o zasięgu ograniczonym do wyższych partii górskich w środkowej i południowej Europie. Występuje w górach począwszy mniej więcej od 1500 m n.p.m., przeważnie ponad górną granicą lasu, w strefie kosodrzewiny i hal. Dane o występowaniu w Polsce opierają się na bardzo dawnych wzmiankach i wymagają potwierdzenia nowymi materiałami. Z uwagi na rozmieszczenie ogólne i wymagania środowiskowe, stanowisko w Skwierzynie nad Wartą (Arnold 1936) jest wątpliwe. O występowaniu w Beskidach i Sudetach wątpi A. Horion (1965), a według A. Szujeckiego* w Polsce nie występuje. Znajdowany pod kamieniami leżącymi na wilgotnych miejscach, zwłaszcza na pobrzeżach pól śnieżnych, pod gnijącym listowiem i igliwiem, ekskrementami, padliną i wśród mchów.
