Gatunek zamieszkujący zachodnią i południową część Europy oraz południową część środkowej Europy. W Polsce notowany z kilku zaledwie stanowisk w południowej części kraju. Występuje na terenach nizinnych i górzystych, gdzie dociera do strefy subalpejskiej. Poławiany przeważnie w sąsiedztwie budynków gospodarskich, w pryzmach kompostowych, pod rozkładającymi się szczątkami roślinnymi, ekskrementami, krowim nawozem, na starych kościach; niekiedy spotykany w lasach wśród mchów i opadłego listowia oraz na łąkach pod skoszoną trawą.
