Gatunek rozprzestrzeniony w prawie całej Europie, na północ sięgający do Wysp Brytyjskich i południowej Szwecji, notowany także z Kaukazu. W Polsce dość rzadko poławiany, częściej w górach, prawdopodobnie występuje wszędzie aczkolwiek nie wykazywany z wielu krain, zwłaszcza nizinnych. Znajdowany na padlinie i w gniazdach ssaków.
