Gatunek rozmieszczony głównie w środkowej i północnej Europie, notowany również z Holandii, Szwajcarii, Istrii i Siedmiogrodu. W Polsce wykazany z nielicznych, rozproszonych stanowisk. Żyje w gniazdach mrówek Formica rufa L., Formica pratensis Retzius i Lasius fuliginosus (Latr.). Zarówno larwy jak i postacie dorosłe prowadzą drapieżny sposób życia w głębszych warstwach mrowisk.
