Gatunek rozmieszczony w północnej i środkowej Europie; w Fennoskandii docierający do skrajnych prowincji północnych; wszędzie rzadko i sporadycznie spotykany. W Polsce wykazany tylko z czterech krain, przeważnie z pojedynczych stanowisk, tylko na Śląsku Dolnym liczniej poławiany. Występuje przeważnie na starych dębach — pod odstającą korą, w murszejącym drewnie, wśród mchów porastających dolne partie pni, pod opadłym listowiem; poza tym znajdowany wśród trocin ściętych buków, pod napływkami na pobrzeżach rzek oraz pod morszczynami wyrzuconymi przez fale na brzeg morza.
